I have to agree with Tyler Perry there is more to his movies than just Madea cutting a fool. There is always a message in his films. He showing people how to love and care about each other, instead of putting them down. For the most part a lot of black people have that crabs in a barrel mentality, this Lee v. Perry seem to be an example of that.
I luv Tyler Perry's movies and they always have a message as well, he adds a comedic relief with Madea but even she has her serious moments and you can learn from her, people are way too hard on Tyler Perry, nobody talks about movies like "Stepbrothers", "The Hangover" and pretty much any Judd Apatow movie, I mean sometimes its just not that serious, and to be honest he is showing black people in an accurate light, we may not all act like that, but majoriy of us do, I can relate to just about every character that is portrayed in any Tyler Perry movie, black people need to stop acting like we are not responsible for the stereotypes of us because we are.
I'm torn! I understand what spike is saying but for crying out loud spike take it easy! I'm so sure every black person for just a second want's to forget the "struggle" and laugh a little. Perry like he said uses a character to interject tolerance peace love and forgiveness shoot even strength. We don't have to prove anything to anyone it does not matter if the world is filled with spikes Obama's and MJJ type talent a person filled with hate will not see who we are just what colour we are. Be true to yourself always.
I understand were Spike is coming from but I still have to go with Tyler Perry. These men are both excellent but very different in what they do, Spike's movies are about history, he has a different outlook on what he gives to our black people. We need to know our history. As a writer that doesn't write about history though, you have to make the characters realistic so it's realatable to the audience but at the same time, not so realistic that it's boring. I mean what would be the point of going to watch a movie or play if we could watch people right outside our homes. A writer/actor observes real people but add to them to make them stand out as this character, as their own. Like Tyler said, the characters are the bate to draw in a audience. His plays are not about the stereotypes of those characters but the movies and plays have a key point. Looking past all the stereotypes and into real life situations that the audience can relate to. That's what Tyler brings to the table and when I watch his shows, plays,& movies I leave feeling uplifted. I can relate to the characters as if I were to meet them in person & their situations they go through are real. These situations happen in our homes and relationships. The message is what is important and what people leave with.
